Physical Education (PE) and School Sport

Sport and physical activity are key to helping children grow into healthy, active and confident individuals. At Queen Edith, pupils enjoy participating in competitive sport, hone their control and coordination through dance and gymnastics, and learn the vital life skill of swimming. Through partnership with the Cambridge School Sports Partnership, we also take part in regular inter-school competitions and sports festivals. See the Cambridge School Sports Partnership website for more details.

Queen Edith recently entered two teams in the QuickSticks hockey competition. Ironically the first game for the A and B team was against each other, which was won by the A team. After 12 matches each the A team finished in 4th place and the B team in 8th out of 13 teams in total, meaning again the A team missed out on a medal by just one place. Well done to both teams for their efforts.

Tag rugby
The Queen Edith tag rugby team performed very well at the recent tag rugby competition, winning 5 out of their 6 group games to progress to the play-offs. They were narrowly defeated in the semi finals and lost the 3rd place play-off to a 'golden try', eventually finishing 4th out of 13 teams and narrowly missing out on a medal. Congratulations to all who took part!

Cross Country Championships
On Monday 27th November, 40 children from Key Stage 2 represented Queen Edith in the Cross Country Championships at Netherhall. On a morning of wet and windy weather, all children showed excellent perseverance as they tackled the 1500m course. Each year group raced separately - while children were waiting to race, they cheered on their peers with great enthusiasm. All of our children ran brilliantly and were very proud of themselves for conquering the enormous hill on the Netherhall field! Queen Edith took home five medals in total (2 gold and 3 silver) and a great drive to succeed in our next competition. Well done to all children who participated!

The Queen Edith Netball ‘B’ team took part in the 2nd round of qualifying matches for the regional netball finals. The team performed well in the group stage, winning 2 out of 3 matches, before the tournament was suspended due to some extreme weather! This unfortunately meant that the team did not progress to the finals, although Queen Edith will be represented by our A team at the finals in June.

High 5 Netball
Seven Year 6's walked across to Netherhall to compete in the first of two 'High 5 Netball' Tournaments.
The team put in some strong performances, with skilful passing down the court and fast footwork to out manoeuvre their opponents.
After settling into the first game 1-0, their shooting improved and goals were scored by Lavinia and Alex to name a few!
They were an absolute credit to the school, with many displays of great team work and talent. The children narrowly came second in their group, despite not losing a game! Fortunately they progressed through to semi-finals and then secured a spot in the county finals in July, beating 18 teams!
WELL DONE to Tom, Vishrut, Alex, Conor, Lavinia and Ania.

Quicksticks Hockey Tournament Thursday 9th March
10 Students from Queen Edith attended the Cambridge Partnership Hockey tournament. We had 2 teams competing against 21 other teams and had a really enjoyable afternoon playing in glorious sunny weather!
The Yellow and Green team experienced a mix of results and really persevered, improving their defence and stick skills game by game.
The Green and White team battled hard to secure 3 wins and a draw, with everyone scoring a goal!!!! They showed great teamwork and determination to win however, fell just shy of reaching the semi-finals.
It was a fantastic afternoon, the children really enjoyed themselves. Thank you to Ali and Shona for supporting!

Davis Cup – September 2016
A selection of children attended the Davis Cup Tour at the Leys School. The afternoon was a great opportunity to be picture with the trophy, speak to County tennis players and have a go a variety of tennis games and practises. A great time was had by all and hopefully inspired a few of them to pick up a tennis racket in future!

Cambridge Partnership Cross Country – November 2016
16 children from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 walked to Netherhall to compete. It was a beautiful sunny, if a little cold Monday afternoon and the children did themselves proud! All children persevered with the undulating course, dodging rabbit and mole hills, challenging themselves to climb the hills and enjoying the fast paced sprint down them! The team were extremely supportive of each other and cheered from the side lines. Special mention to children, finishing in the top 5; these were Emma finishing 4th in the Year 4 girls race, Vatan finishing 2nd in the Year 4 boys race and JoJo winning the Year 5 girls event!
