Year 6 Learning
Academic Year 2025-2026
South American Geography – November
In one of our first lessons about our new topic of South America, we discussed what we already knew, what we wanted to learn before children learned basic facts about the continent and used atlases to label the 12 (really 13!) countries that make up South America as well as their capital cities.
Tag Rugby Tournament vs Queen Emma – November
On the 5th November, Year 6 played a Tag Rugby tournament against Queen Emma. Both schools split each Year 6 class into 3 teams and played matches against each other, revolving teams each time. The matches went very smoothly and all teams had 7 players on the pitch at once. It was the best and most fair matches in a few years and our sports coaches admitted that! We look forward to more Inter-Federation matches soon!

NSPCC Workshop - November
Year 6 enjoyed a very important workshop from a volunteer from the NSPCC recently. This linked in to our PSHCE topic of ‘Rights and Responsibilities’. The workshop helped children to understand more about abuse in all its forms, including bullying. We talked about how to recognise signs of abuse and how to protect ourselves. Finally, we discussed how to get help and the sources of help available, including Childline. It was a session that was serious in parts, but was made fun and interactive by our visitor and Buddy, their mascot.
Homework Projects – October
This half term, our Year 6 pupils have been diving deep into life during World War II through a range of creative and thought-provoking homework projects. They’ve been busy writing and testing their own rationed recipes, discovering fascinating facts about key figures and weapons from the war, and even stepping into the shoes of people from the past by writing heartfelt letters as soldiers or evacuees. Their work has shown incredible curiosity, imagination, and empathy as they’ve brought history to life in truly inspiring ways.
To complete our learning, we offered pupils an opportunity to craft, write and present anything they wanted about World War II. There were some astounding projects – Year 6 pupils had to be brave to read them out loud in the time allowed and we were able to listen to everyone else too! Numerous topics were covered such as D-Day, aeroplanes, tanks, rationing, submarines and even nursing heroes. Many children had original ideas that were explained perfectly. Congratulations to all!

Paul Nash Art – October
In art, Year 6 have been studying Paul Nash. He is known for his World War 1 and 2 paintings that use surrealism. We have created a piece of artwork inspired by him of the Blitz. We have also worked on our colour mixology by learning how to make secondary and tertiary colours using just the 3 primary colours. As well as learning different sketching techniques such as hatching and cross-hatching and even creating our own colour wheels.

World War 2 Day – October
On Tuesday 21st October, the children had the opportunity to experience life in WW2. They cracked Morse coded messages, created telegrams to send home to their families, decided what to pack in their suitcase, created propaganda posters and built Spitfire planes to defend Britain. They also ate like evacuees; creating honey balls and jam sandwiches with rationed ingredients and then enjoying their spoils in the afternoon. A ‘making do and mend’ attitude was prevalent with the children, especially when sewing fabrics to create bunting; celebrating the end of the war and the hard working soldiers returning home! Thanks to Miss Hayden and volunteers for making it a day to remember!

BMX Workshops – October
On 17th October, the school went for a morning assembly to the hall where we met Mike Mullen, six times British champion and two time world champion on the half pipe. Year 6 then even got to do workshops with him – we learned so many tricks taught to us. For every trick we learned there was an easy, hot and spicy challenge. We took the BMX bikes on small ramps and put our feet in different places where we had to balance and the workshop was really fun. I would recommend it!

Scientific Timeline Walk – October
In order to try and understand just how long ago the creation of earth was, as well as understanding evolution and how long it takes, Year 6 took to our lovely outdoor space for a timeline walk. We all started at one end of our field and as we walked forward, counted the number of million years between each significant event. Each step that we took represented 10 million years and we had to make these steps smaller as we reached the other end of the field. When we looked back, it was amazing to see just how far away these events happened.
Fitness in PE – October
In PE, we have been doing Fitness on Mondays with Miss Hayden. We have been developing our stamina, balance and strength by completing a range of activities. For example, skipping, running and circuits that include star jumps, push ups and planks. This has really benefitted our physical and mental health. On Wednesdays, we have PE with Mr Laker, where we have been learning how to play tag rugby. It has been really fun and enjoyable. “Tag Rugby is amazing and is so fun!” commented Lilly H. PE really helps you with your physical fitness and keeps you fit and healthy.

Our trip to Duxford Imperial War Museum – October
At Duxford IWM, we learnt all about the Battle of Britain and we expanded our knowledge of WW2. At first, we went inside the Conservation Hangar to look at people mending different aircrafts and restoring them. Then we headed towards the Ops block to find out more about during the battles in the air. In the Airspace Hangar, we looked at the Aircraft Assault Museum and boarded the Concorde. In summary, I think this was an amazing trip!

Anne Frank Biography – September
As part of our wonderful World War II topic, we studied the life of Anne Frank, a remarkable teenage girl who wrote a very famous diary. We created our own biography about her life using what we had learned from our research.

Creating a scientific branching database – September
Our Science topic this half term is Inheritance and Evolution so in the first few lessons we have learned about classification and how different plants and animals might be grouped. Carl Linnaeus was a Swedish scientist who published the first system for classifying all living things. An adapted version of this system is still used today – the Linnaeus system. Pupils went outside to collect a range of leaves before creating their own version of a branching database within table groups.
Artistic techniques – September
We have been looking at different pencil drawing techniques this half term and tried out some of our own! We looked at hatching, cross hatching, scumbling, stippling and more.
Bikeability – September
At the beginning of the term, we took part in Bikeability from Monday to Thursday. It was really enjoyable to be able to learn new things everyday about road safety until we managed to pass our test at the end. There were 4 groups that took part, 2 went out in the morning and the other 2 in the afternoon. It was very fun and we wish we could do it again.

Mathematics – September
Year 6 have been revising and investigating negative numbers and played a bingo style game in pairs using dice. We had great fun and had lots of practise with subtracting across zero.
World War 2 Topic – September
This half term, Year 6 are learning about World War II. In one of our first topic lessons, we looked at the countries that were involved and whether they were allies, neutral or an axis power. We used our geographical knowledge from previous lessons, our own research, and the atlases to help us colour code our own maps of Europe.
